László Hudec, the Hungarian architect born in Besztercebánya (Banska Bystrica), became successful in Shanghai, and later grew to be world-famous. After the decline of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, he lost his Hungarian citizenship, which he regained in 1941. A year later he was asked to fulfill the tasks of an honorary consul in the Chinese city. Using his privileged title he saved a number of the Hungarian Jews living in Shanghai.
